0. Class Resources

What's on this blog?

  • At the beginning of each unit a new post will appear with the whole lesson outline for that unit.
  • Students and parents/guardians can use this page to see what is going on in class, when labs, quizzes, and tests are scheduled.
  • The lesson outline will be updated daily as needed.

Applied Physical Science Materials List:
  • Charged chromebook & headphones
  • A 2 inch, 3 ring binder with a clear-view cover
  • At least 5 dividers with tabs (we will have 10 units and will use both sides of the dividers)
  • Loose-leaf lined paper (~20 sheets)
  • Graph paper (~ 20 sheets)
  • Calculator (scientific or graphing, NOT a cell phone)
  • #2 pencils, Blue and/or black pen, and a Highlighter
  • Recommended - 2 Dry Erase Markers, Colored pencils, Colored pens, 1 sharpie

Course Overview:
Applied Physical Science introduces foundational concepts and skills in the following areas:
  1. Chemistry (The Periodic Table, Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding, Properties of Matter, Chemical Reactions, & Nuclear Reactions)
  2. Astronomy (The history of our understanding of the universe, The Big Bang Theory, Galaxies, & Stars)
  3. Physics (Motion, Forces, Energy, Electricity, & Waves)

Course Format:
  • Instruction: Applied Physical Science utilizes a modified-flipped model. Direct instruction (notes) are given in class and also available online via EdPuzzle videos. The EdPuzzles are available for points should students chose to complete them and are only required for students who are absent when the direct instruction is given in class. Additional practice work is completed during class.
  • Labs: The course includes a series of hands-on laboratory experiences which are completed in small groups, discussed as a class, and assessed independently via lab quizzes. Lab scores include points from the lab quiz as well as additional points for data tables and graphs completed during the lab investigation.
  • Tests: Each unit culminates in a unit test. Students will need to apply content knowledge, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking (analysis) skills to be successful on the unit tests. There is a cumulative final exam given at the end of the semester worth 10% of the final course grade.
  • Homework: Students are expected to spend 20-30 minutes per night on assignments and review. Homework items typically include Guided Readings from the textbook, study guides, optional practice tests, and any lab questions that were not completed during class.
  • Office Hours: Mrs. Sutterlin is available during QRP (T & Th), all 3 lunch periods (M & W), and after school for additional support. Students who are absent should schedule a time to meet with Mrs. Sutterlin to review missed content and make up lab work. A hall pass is required.
